This is the web page for the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) funded Digital British Islam project (grant number ES/W002175/1).

Digital British Islam: How do Cyber Islamic Environments impact everyday life?’’ (shortened to ‘DBI’) is an innovative multi-institution investigation led by Professor Gary R. Bunt (University of Wales Trinity Saint David – UWTSD). The ESRC awarded DBI a £804,000 grant. The three-year project began in 2022.   

As Principal Investigator, Professor Bunt is working in collaboration with Co-Investigator Professor Sariya Cheruvallil-Contractor (Coventry University) and Co-Investigator Professor Frédéric Volpi (University of Edinburgh).

The DBI team includes Research Fellows Dr Khadijah Elshayyal (Edinburgh) and Dr Sadek Hamid (UWTSD). DBI’s Post-Doctoral Researchers are Dr Alamgir Ahmed (Coventry University/UWTSD) and Dr Laura Jones (UWTSD).

The Digital British Islam Conference will be held in Coventry, 5-6 February 2025.

Our Methodologies

We utilise five methods within a netnographic approach to develop a granulated analysis of online activity and its influence within diverse British Muslim communities.
